Designing Urban Spaces
by Marten Flegel, Anna Froelicher, Freya Hermann and Felix Worpenberg
Traditionally cities are perceived as places of separation and anonymity: Their inhabitants seek for individuality and independence. Good neighborly relations lose their importance and make room for temporary networks.
In contrast we go on a quest for fostering moments of communities in urban environments. We take a look on the discourse about urban community, whose constitution is aimed at by city planners and urban designers just as much as by subculture and movements for public participation.
Hildesheim becomes the venue for our research: The participants will be equipped with GPS devices in order to follow a route of several coordinates. Each person sets out separately on a 45-minute walk through the town, where different concepts of urban lifestyle become apparent.
